AMAZON FACTS
Amazon in numbers
The Amazon rainforest extends over an area of 2.7 million square miles / 7 million km2.The Amazon Forest holds some 2,500 tree species and 30,000 plant species (30 percent of all plant species) of all Latin America species.Has the largest number of freshwater fish species in existence, estimated at more than 3,000.The Amazon River is the longest river extending approximately 2.3 million square miles. Its water volume flow equals 20 percent of the joint volume of all rivers on Earth. In Amazonia there are 428 species of mammals, 1,622 of birds, 467 of reptiles and 516 types of amphibians, yet these numbers are always changing. Scientists challenge that only 40 percent of all insect species have so far been identified, and that an estimated 20.000 of plant species remain undiscovered.
Geography Flora and Fauna
The Amazon rainforest extends over an area of 2.7 million square miles / 7 million km2. It is bigger than Western Europe, and covers an area equivalent to nine times the state of Texas. It stretches across nine countries: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and is the largest rainforest in the world. The Amazon Basin, an even bigger area drained by the Amazon River and its many tributaries, is a major life force of the planet. The clear, black and muddy waterways of the Basin have been a lifeline and major means of transportation for aeons. Bounded by the Guianan Highlands in the north, the Brazilian highlands in the south, and the Andes in the west, it is inhabited by roughly 25 million people, and possesses the greatest bio-diversity of flora and fauna in the world. (the Amazon forest is basically formed by dry land forests, which are out of the direct influence of the rivers, not suffering floods; meadow forests, flooded by the muddy rivers in the rainy season; and the igapó forests, almost permanently flooded by black rivers. There are patches of savanna land among the forests, as well as poor vegetation and grasslands over the sand patches.
Flora and Fauna
The Amazon rainforest is one of the richest places in the world in flora and fauna diversity. It is a glorious display of towering Brazil nut trees, Brazil wood, myriad palms, kapok-bearing ceiba trees enlaced with vines and creepers, rosewood, orchids, water lilies measuring 6 ft. in diameter, and the wild rubber tree. This magnificent, intertwined emerald green rainforest canopy, plays host to some 2,500 tree and 30,000 plant species. Housed within these layers of vegetation is a variety of tropical fauna. These include hundreds of types of macaws, toucans, parrots, and other brightly colored birds, and brilliant butterflies and insects. There are many species of small monkeys, and such distinctive mammals as the Brazilian leopard (onca pintada), armadillo, sloth, tapir and kinkajou. Anacondas, boas, other large tropical snakes and crocodiles represent a respected reptilian array. The rivers in the region abound with freshwater tortoises and dolphins (boto), exotic tropical fishes and the common yet infamous "cannibal fish" (piranha). In all, more than 2,000 fish species have been identified.
People of the Amazon
Currently there are approximately 227 different tribes totaling 280,000 native Indians in Brazil. Another 30,000 have left their villages for urban areas. This indigenous population is concentrated in the state of Amazonas, where about 60% of all Brazilian Indians remain. Tribal groups vary in size, from the thriving 40,000 Ticuna in Brazil, Peru and Columbia and the fierce 26,000 Yanomani in Brazil and Venezuela ,to those that sadly have been reduced to a dozen or so individuals. There are 163 different indigenous languages, and including dialects, the number rises to 195.
A sustainable project
1-Preserve the forest
Lungs of the planet
The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet" because it provides the essential environmental world service of continuously recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. Green plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and release oxygen into the atmosphere in return. The Amazon forests are the Earth's air purifiers, given the large amounts of carbon dioxide they absorb from the atmosphere. The Amazon rainforest is not only the world’s natural air purifier but also regulates rainfall regimes and climate worldwide. Deforestation would change rainfall patterns and contribute to the increase of global temperatures with devastating consequences. The challenge of maintaining the integrity of the Amazon forest is immense and urgent. The threats against the forest persist, and are amplified with the advance of the frontier. We believe that sustainable economic development in the Amazon is the key to forest preservation, and that a standing rainforest has more value than a deforested one. Promoting fair trade and sustainable products from the Amazon contributes to the development of an economy that maintains itself: where natural resources are not exhausted and local communities are fully involved. That is why TerrAmazon has a market-based approach, not only for providing unique natural products from the Amazon rainforest, but also for increasing consumer awareness and education.
2- Fair trade practices
Fair Trade: a definition
Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seek greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers. Fair Trade organizations are engaged actively in supporting producers, rising awareness, and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade. This definition of Fair Trade has been agreed by an informal network of the four Fair Trade Organizations below, known by their initials as FINE. It is our commitment to supply the best quality natural products prepared from the highest quality raw materials. In our search for unique products, we travel extensively; having the opportunity to establish trust and a mutual respect with our suppliers in the Amazon rainforest where raw material grows naturally. Our products are sustainable grown by small farmers in the Amazon rainforest. We support fair trade practices and social responsibility because the local community’s development and its welfare is the key to preserve the forest.
